Seattle +141 over L.A. ANGELS

4:07 PM EST. Every year the Angels are projected to contend and every year they don’t. They are less a baseball franchise than they are a modern Greek tragedy filled with heroes ultimately unable to overcome the odds. Mike Trout is hurt. Anthony Rendon is hurt and playing through it. Albert Pujols is released. Shohei Ohtani looks like the most talented player on Earth, yet it barely matters. The boulder will always roll down the hill and now it’s Patrick Sandoval’s (LHP - SEA) to disappoint.

Sandoval has appeared in six games this year with three coming as a starter. In 21 frames, he’s walked 10 and struck out 17 for a rather weak ratio. Last season, a long-ball barrage sent this developing starter back to the alternate camp by mid-August. He fared better in September return (6 runs in 16 IP) mostly in long relief, but jacks were a problem throughout. He’s a work-in-progress and and may pan out well but right now he’s worthy of this billing.

Logan Gilbert (RHP - SEA) earned his first pure quality start with five strikeouts and two earned runs allowed in five IP versus Oakland on May 31. The tall (6'6") righty was the No. 14 overall pick in the 2018 draft. He dominated three different levels of the minors in 2019 while displaying excellent control of his four-pitch arsenal. He mixes a mid-90s four-seam fastball with a lively two-seamer, and those are primarily offset by a low-80s slider and a knuckle-curve. Double-A proved no problem for Gilbert, but the big indicator of future success will be whether he can maintain his excellent control at the big league level. If so, then he has the strong potential to settle into a mid-rotation (or better) spot. In 17 innings, he was struck out 16 while issuing just three walks. Dude can pitch so for fantasy players, we say, "This may be your last chance to get him cheap. You'll be glad you did". To bettors, we say, in a 50/50 proposition, Gilbert and the M’s are certainly worthy here.
