Boston +134 over NY YANKEES

7:35 PM EST. Hey, we don’t want to alarm anyone, but the Boston Red Sox might be good but at the very worst, they’re playable here against a Yankees’ squad that is not only banged up but that has lost seven of nine.

Domingo Germán (RHP - NYY) looks the same after a year off. Germán missed all of the 2020 season due to a domestic violence suspension. A strong performance during spring training (1.38 ERA, 17/1 K/BB in 13 IP helped him lock down a rotation spot, where he has displayed outstanding control early on, walking 10 batters in 10 starts. However, the whiffs are down slightly for Germán this season. He continues to miss bats with a curve he throws on about one-third of his offerings, but his four-seamer continues to get punished, with opposing batters slugging .880 on the pitch in the small sample thus far. Home runs have been an issue for Germán (1.7 career HR/9), and this season his fly ball rate is up (44%) and he has allowed multiple homers in four of his 10 starts. Note that all four times it occurred at Yankee Stadium.

Garett Richards (RHPM - BOS) signed a 1-year, 10M contract with the Red Sox and is performing at a WAR (Wins Above Replacement) of 0.8. In other words, the Red Sox could have signed a dude for the MLB minimum and received better production but that doesn’t mean Richards isn’t playable. You see, German’s WAR is 0.5. Richards has made several adjustments and improved his K%-BB% (8% to 12%) and groundball rate from 44% to 52% from April to May. In his last start, his groundball rate was 57% and his K-rate is also trending in the right direction. Regardless of the reverse, the value is all on Boston here.
