L.A. ANGELS -1½ +145 over Cleveland

9:38 PM EST. Sam Hentges (LHP - CLE) was selected by Cleveland in the 14th round of the 2014 draft and has overcome Tommy John surgery early in his pro career. He has spent the majority of his time as a starter, though many believe he is best positioned for a bullpen role. He has great size – 6’6” 245 pounds – and uses a high ¾ slot to throw on a steep downward plane to the plate. Hentges comes in with a nifty 3.29 ERA after five appearances covering 14 innings. Four of his five appearances came in relief. Hentges’ underlying numbers are troublesome to put it mildly. His first-pitch strike rate is weak at 44%. His swing and miss rate is also weak at 7.9% so his 14 K’s in 14 innings is not supported. Dude has benefitted from a pretty sick 97% strand rate. His xERA (5.95) and WHIP (1.76) tell the real story of his weak skills. Predictively, Hentges is about to get whacked.

The Indians make most starters look like Sandy Koufax and make almost every lefty look like Steve Carlton. They’ll face a southpaw here that they have never seen. That figures to bode well for Patrick Sandoval (LHP - LAA).

Sandoval’s stuff is filthy. He hasn't delivered any value in the early-going (6.14 ERA, 1.50 WHIP in 7 IP), but he hasn't been given much of an opportunity either. When he has pitched, he has shown his ability to generate a lot of whiffs (14.5%) and keep the ball on the ground (55%). Those strengths still are the fuel that could turn him into an impact starter if he ever throws more strikes. Sandoval has legit swing-and-miss stuff, as shown by his near 15.0% rate the past two seasons. He was electric last September, albeit in a tiny sample size but this kid is one of the best under the radar starters in the game right now.
