Detroit +118 over OAKLAND

4:07 PM EST. Detroit's first-round pick in 2018, the 6'3", 220-pound Casey Mize (RHP - DET) made the majors last year, bringing with him a bevy of question marks. The stuff is premium, though the secondaries stood out more, as the fastball lost some bite last year and he had some difficulty controlling it. His slider and splitter are both plus pitches, and there's also a curveball in here that keeps looking better. There's some front end projection in here and he now draws a road turn against an Oakland nine which has thus far scuffled its way to a whiff-heavy .672 OPS. Mize was sharp in his last (seven shutout innings against Houston) and has done well to mitigate hard contact. Mize’s velocity is up more than 1½ miles ( now at 95.6) per hour from 2020.

Oakland Athletics RHP Daulton Jefferies and LHP A.J. Puk were both optioned to the team's alternate training site very early in the season. The pitching moves mean that, in something of a surprise, former Phillie Cole Irvin (LHP - OAK) has won the fifth starter job for now. Well, at least until IL'ed Mike Fiers returns, likely after just a few turns through the rotation. Irvin pitched very well during the spring, fanning 18 against just three walks in 18 innings, including 6 innings of one-hit ball in his last spring start. To that we say, “Big f**king deal”. Irvin doesn't have overpowering stuff, however, and his roughly 50 innings of MLB experience to date have been underwhelming (career 6.75 ERA) and so has his first two starts. Irvin has five K’s in 10 innings with a 5.4% swing & miss rate. His 5.78 xERA is almost two runs lower than his actual ERA of 7.45 but that’s like putting perfume on a pig.
