BALTIMORE +118 over Boston

7:05 PM EST. Garrett Richards teased the baseball world with over 200 innings in 2015. Since then, he has thrown a total of 196 MLB innings. Injuries have cut into every season and while Richards has shown an ability to bounce back after a start that went sideways (he was tagged for 6 earned runs on 7 hits in just 2 IP in his season debut), his swing & miss rate in his first start of just 9% is a warning sign. That said, this wager is not about fading Richards. It’s more about getting behind the wrongly priced Orioles.

One of the bigger surprises in spring training, Bruce Zimmermann (LHP - BAL ) has won a role in the Orioles' starting rotation to begin 2021. Zimmermann is a strong lefty who adeptly changes speeds and eye levels with his plethora of offerings. None of his pitches may grade as plus and he lacks premium velocity with his fastball, but he thrives with deception and solid command. His fastball has jumped over the last year and now sits comfortably in the low-90s. Zimmermann uses both a slider and curveball, thrown with varying speeds. His slider has a bit more giddyup while the curveball is a slower, bending offering. His change-up shows flashes of being a solid pitch, particularly against right-handed hitters. The deception comes from consistent arm speed and release point. Acquired from the Braves in July 2018, Zimmermann has limited walks throughout his career and can be counted on to throw quality strikes to all quadrants of the strike zone. Zimmermann actually reminds us of a young Zack Grienke, who came into the league also with a plethora of offerings and has thrived ever since.

In this day and age, pitchers like Zimmermann are rare and thus, these young hitters that have been bred and trained to sit dead-red have nothing but problems trying to hit a dude that can change speeds so easily on a number of different pitches. Dude is a thinking man’s pitcher that succeeds more with savvy than raw stuff and keeps hitters off balance while throwing strikes left and right (26% ball%).
