Texas +120 over TORONTO

8:05 PM EST. Dane Dunning (RHP - TEX) will be making his first start as a member of the Rangers, after being traded to Texas from the White Sox as part of the Lance Lynn deal. He made seven starts in his rookie season, throwing two dominant starts and two disaster starts. Across those seven starts, Dunning flashed decent skills (4.11 xERA, 9.3 K’s/9). Right-handed batters struggled against him with a .152 BA and .454 OPS and he’ll face a Blue Jays’ heavy right-handed lineup.

Prior to last season, Tanner Roark (RHP - RHP) signed a two year deal worth 24 million in what has to be one of the worst contracts we’ve ever witnessed, as dude is a below replacement level pitcher. The Jays could have signed 500 other pitchers at 5% of the cost they are paying this stiff. Roark posted a 6.80/5.90 ERA/xERA split last year with a WHIP of 1.74. He’s had bad runs similar in previous years, but 20+ more starts always allowed him to find his level, even if it wasn't great. Last year’s schedule did him no favors either, as almost all starts were against above average lineups but that’s a weak excuse. Roark’s velocity dip and burgeoning HR issue are most alarming and push him to the 5th starter tier on his best day. 10 years ago, a 24M contract for two years would have made headlines across sports pages but today it is reserved for anyone that can throw the occasional strike. Tanner Roark and the Jays may indeed win here, as they are favored to do so and Roark may enjoy the benefits of Toronto’s bats but he is most certainly fade material when favored on the road and hasn’t been able to get many outs since getting paid.
