4:10 PM EST. Garrett Richards (RHP - SD) draws negative ratings for his matchup against Oakland's average OPS vs. RHP. While he has a 10.6% swing and miss rate and Oakland has a 26% K% vs. RHP, his strikeout rate has fallen to a 7.5 K’s/9. With 3.6 BB’s/9 and a 1.40 WHIP, Richards 4.75 xERA contributes to a negative ERA rating and highlights the risk. We do not care because this wager is all about fading Mike Fiers (RHP - OAK). 

Aside from average control that has seen Fiers walk 10 batters in 27 frames, this is an unremarkable collection of skills. Things aren’t as rosy in the strikeout department, as Fiers is again not missing many bats. His strikeout rate and swing and miss rate rank 85th and 93rd, respectively, among 94 qualified MLB starting pitchers. An auspicious strand rate has served a major role in covering his flaws (see 6.03 xERA). Fiers continues to utilize a pitch-to-contact approach to get the most out of what he has left in the tank. However, with an 87.8 mph fastball and a puny swing and miss rate, he has very little margin for error. Not only is he the second best pitcher in this matchup, the A’s are the second best team.
