Seattle +133 over L.A. ANGELS

4:10 PM EST. Marco Gonzales (LHP - SEA) heads out on the road for the sixth time in seven turns this season, as he takes on a familiar foe here. In two games against the Angels on July 30 and August 5, Gonzalez surrendered three earned runs in 13.1 innings with 13 K’s and 1 BB en route to a pair of pretty sweet performances. The LAA offense has been a Top-10 in production at home (.813 OPS), but they’ve been dreadful against LHP (.629 OPS) and below league average over the last seven days. Gonzales has only elicited 3 walks on the season; good for a 0.8 BB’s/9. His ERA grade isn’t spectacular, but he’s provided a fair amount of safety from start-to-start, as he’s allowed more than three earned runs only once.

The wager here is more about fading the Angels starter, Jaime Barria, who was recalled from wherever he was on August 25th, He’s appeared in long relief twice, covering nine innings but this will be his first start of the year. Both times he was called in to mop up. Against the Astronauts in a scheduled seven-inning game,  Barria came in with the Halos trailing 6-0. Against the Giants, he came in with his team trailing 6-1 in the sixth inning. He had zero expectations and less pressure when he came in to clean up. The dynamics for this appearance is completely different, as he’s being asked to start and that brings back not so fond memories.

Last year, Barria went 4-10 with a 6.42 ERA in 83 innings for the Angels. He spent most of the 1st half in AAA before getting an extended look in the majors. When he did get a look, he delivered shaky results, as Ball% and swing and miss rates crashed, while his sky-high fly-ball rate led to 16 HR in just 127 plate appearances vR. We suppose we shouldn’t write him off yet given his age (24) and likely strand%, hr/f regression, but he has a lot of work to do in order to become interesting again. Dude has proven NOTHING at this level and he cannot be priced like he’s Shane Bieber.
