Baltimore +149 over TAMPA BAY

6:40 PM EST. Asher Wojciechowski (RHP - BAL) put up some ugly stats in 2019 (4.92 ERA, 1.9 HR/9). This year isn’t much different with a 4.84 ERA after five starts covering 22 innings. However, Wojciechowski has struck out 21 batters, walked just seven and has the support of a 12.1% swing and miss rate and 63% first-pitch strike rate.  His 87.6 mph average exit velocity is actually very good and suggests he deserves a better fate though, as that mark supports a 4.31 xERA and 1.2 xHR/9. This looks like a decent enough venue for him to have success. Keep him on your radar but this wager is more about fading Trevor Williams (RHP - TB).

Trevor Richards and Nick Anderson were acquired by the Tampa Bay Rays on July 31, 2019 in exchange for OF Jesus X. Sanchez and RP Ryne Stanek. Trevor Williams is a starter, turned reliever, turned starter, turned long relief, turned whatever. Nobody can find a role for him. Just before the trade, Richards was moved to the bullpen in Miami after losing seven of his last eight starts, thanks to the dangerous combination of walking more batters and giving up more homers. He’s worked five games this year, one as a starter.

After struggling to throw strikes as starter, Richards’ stuff played up in shorter stints after the trade to Tampa but his tools aren't good enough to be a difference maker in the bullpen. Thus, the Rays are hoping he can give them a few innings as a starter. As a flyball pitcher with only two pitches, he'll continue to underwhelm as a starter even if he can replicate good minor-league control. Richards represents the state of today’s game, as teams are using anyone they can find off the scrap heap or elsewhere to provide them innings. Trevor Richards has a 5.94/5.85 ERA/xERA split with a 1.68 WHIP and now he’s priced like he’s Max Fried. Big overlay.
