SK Wyverns +136 over NC Dinos

5:30 PM EST. It might be time to start playing some of these undervalued squads with poor records because the discrepancy in records does not equal the discrepancy in talent. Take SK Wyverns for instance, a team that is off to an ugly 1-7 start and now they’re a significant dog in their own barn because of it. SK Wyverns is better than its record.

Symbolized by slugger Jamie Romak, SK boasts the league’s most powerful lineup of the era. This is very much the same team that posted an 88-55-1 record last year. The SK franchise has seen, compared to the rest of the league, far fewer scandals among its players and management. The team’s organizational philosophy is to draft and extend, as they rarely sign players from other clubs.

SK will send out Moon Seung-won (0-0, 6.35 ERA). Moon struck out seven batters in 5.2 frames in his first start of the year but was tagged for two jacks and four earned runs. Last year, he posted a solid 3.88 ERA over 23 games started and also posted a nifty 1.13 WHIP.

By contrast, the NC Dinos are hot out of the gate at 7-1 but regression is coming. The Dinos will send out Lee Jae-hak (1-0, 6.75) to make his second start of the year after he was banged around in his first start. Lee is no stranger to getting banged around. He’s been in this league since 2010 and missed 2011 and 2012 before returning in 2013. His best WHIP year was 1.35 in 2017 but he’s been above 1.40 every other year, which is our threshold for determining which pitchers are borderline awful. A pitcher in MLB for instance, would not keep his job if he posted WHIPs over 1.40 every year. The Wyverns figure to hit the reset button here and focus on this very important series at home. If this was the first series of the year, SK would be a slight favorite but two contrasting records have set up this nice overlay.
