NC Dinos -1½ +108 over KT Wiz
5:30 AM EST. KT Wiz starter, Bae Je-seong is coming off a beautiful start on paper but we’re not buying it for a second. Dude went 6.1 frames and allowed just two runs for an ERA of 2.84 but he was tagged for eight hits and only struck out one lousy batter. That’s known as very good fortune in Batting Average on Batted Balls in Play (BABIP). Bae Je-seong has pitched to a career 4.55 ERA and 1.55 WHIP over 53 appearances. Furthermore, the Wiz are 1-6 to start the year so they are gripping the bats a little bit tighter, which does not bode well against the 6-1 Dinos and their starter.
Koo Chang-mo is the best strikeout pitcher in the league, and it isn’t a close contest. Among returning starters who threw at least 100 innings last year:
Chang-mo Koo9.6 K’s/9
Kim Won-joong8.2
Yang Hyeon-jong 7.9
Chang See-hwan 7.8
Chang Min-je 7.8
The southpaw doesn’t throw particularly hard but like many starters in the league, he tops out in the low-90s. Still, opposing hitters have a lot of trouble with his fastball, for a couple reasons. First, he throws a two-and a four-seamer, distinct pitches that give him multiple looks at the upper bound of his velo range. Second, he commands them both superbly, particularly to his arm-side where he toys with hitters on either side of the black. Third, his two-seamer has excellent horizontal run, late break with plus movement. Finally, he also has a great changeup. The change tunnels very well with his two-seamer, and he doesn’t slow his arm down at all. Just 23-years-old, Koo may well have a big-league future, and he’s a major part of the powerful punch at the top of the Dinos’ rotation. In his season debut, Koo went six full, allowing just two hits while striking out eight. The Dinos are 6-1 and we’ll trust them to keep the good times rolling here.
