Lotte Giants +100 over KT WIZ

Thursday morning, 5:30 AM EST. The Lottie Giants posted a 48-93-3 record last year while the Wiz went 71-71-1 and it’s for that reason that KT Wiz are overvalued. We’ll look to take advantage of a market that we trust we are ahead of. You see, the Wiz are getting worse while the Giants continue to improve. KT Wiz is very active in signing players from other teams (rejects) in free agency, even if those transactions aren’t always productive. KT hasn’t had a lot of time to establish their identity. They’re generally among the lowest run-scoring teams in the league, while using free agency to spackle the roster instead of building through youth.

Bae Je-seong starts for the Wiz after posting a 10-10 record last year with a 3.67 ERA. That’s a decent enough stat line on paper but under the hood, it’s not nearly as pretty. Je-Seong had a WHIP of 1.43 through 131 frames with a weak strikeout rate and high walk rate. He struck out 91 and walked 56. Dude missed all of 2018 (one start) but in his rookie season in 2017, he was torched to the tune of a 8.72 ERA and 2.12 WHIP. Last year’s ERA was nothing more than good fortune, as his xERA of 5.11 will attest to.

Lotte’s GM and manager both resigned mid-season last year and the team looked overseas to change directions, including new GM Sung Min-Kyu, scout for the Cubs; bench coach Hank Conger and minor league manager Larry Sutton, former MLB players. The Giants are one of the most popular teams in the country, with one of the largest markets, and one of the longest histories. And yet the franchise has struggled mightily over the past quarter-century, often through front-office ineptitude and mismanagement. It’s very much the New York Mets, down to the bright spotlight and constant intrigue surrounding the team, even down to the fact that like the Mets, the Giants aren’t that bad. They have their periods of resurgence, only to choke in the playoffs and then dull the excitement with some media gaffe. 2020 is the beginning of a new era, results to be determined.

Take out 2018 and Giants starter tonight, Park Se-Woong has been very decent in two of the past three years with a 3.68/3.92 ERA/xERA split in 2017 and a 4.20/4.24 ERA/xERA last year. He only gave up three jacks in 60 innings last year, which is a good indication that he’s a groundball pitcher. In his final two starts of last season, Park gave up one earned run in 12 full innings combined.

Park

At age 24, the kid looks like a keeper in this league and we absolutely trust that we have the better pitcher, the better team and the true value on an underrated squad that probably should be favored here. Incidentally, the Giants racked up nine runs on the Wiz last night en route to a 9-4 victory and there is a good feel about the new management and direction of this live underdog.
