1:05 PM EST. J.A. Happ (LHP - NYY) hasn't fared well in his last five games, as his 7.29 ERA with three disasters over that stretch will attest to. The southpaw didn't have much success at Oakland on August 21, as he gave up two jacks and five earned in four innings. Happ’s poor control and 1.49 WHIP in the second half, along with his 22% hr/f at Yankee Stadium makes him a weak favorite against a strong Oakland nine. Furthermore, right-handed batters have an .851 OPS and 26 bombs against Happ. There is nothing good about spotting a price with Happ against the A’s.

The Yanks are priced in this range for two reasons. One, they’re the Yankees and secondly, Sean Manaea (RHP - OAK) will make his first start of the year. Last year, Manaea had a rollercoaster year that started with a no-hitter and a 1.00 April ERA. It ended with shoulder surgery that put his 2019 return in question. In between, he was stingy with the free pass, but his strikeouts waned as velocity/swing & miss eroded, while his xERA remained unimpressed. There is not enough volume here to work with but here’s what we do know...Dude has had 51 pure quality starts over three seasons before he ran into some health issues. We also know that he had filthy stuff and still does. Manaea also made five starts at Triple-AAA Las Vegas of the Pacific Coast League and dominated with 13.8 K’s/9, 1.9 BB’s/9, a 48% groundball rate and a 3.67 xERA. That xERA in the Pacific Coast League is as elite as elite gets in conditions that mimic Coors Field at every park. Manaea only allowed 16 hits while striking out 43 batters in 28 frames in his five “rehab” starts. His pitch count today figures to be somewhere near 100 and he looks as healthy as he's ever been.
