10:10 PM EST. The Mariners went into Toronto last week and took two of three from the Blue Jays. No big deal, right? What is a big deal, however, is that Trent Thornton (RHP - TOR) started the middle game of that series and was a -165 favorite over Reggie McClain, a little known starter with just a handful of MLB games under his belt. Seattle won that game 4-3 but that means very little here. The point is that if Trent Thornton was -165 six days ago, how can he be so much less this time around? We could understand the argument if Seattle was sending out one of their reliable starters but today’s starter hasn’t proved anything. We once again turn to value and we’ll repeat, if Thornton was -165 over this same team six days ago, there is nothing but value on him here. Tons of it.
Justus Sheffield (LHP - SEA) is set to make his first MLB start today and his first appearance since April. He has split the last few months between AAA and AA. First, he was terrible at AAA-Tacoma where in 12 starts he went 2-6 with a 6.87 ERA, 1.82 WHIP, and 48/41 K/BB in 55 innings. Dude was sent back down to Double-AA and that is a MASSIVE red flag. In 12 starts at Double-A Arkansas, the kid was fantastic with a 5-3 record to go along with a 2.19 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, and 85/18 K/BB in 78 innings. On this promotion, he’s skipping Triple-AAA after he couldn’t conquer it just a few weeks ago. It will be interesting to see if he can carry his recent momentum over to this start versus the Blue Jays but he’s a raw, Double-AA prospect and the Blue Jays are a damn tough team to beat these days with all that youthful talent and energy.
