7:10 PM EST. Have starting pitchers become so meaningless in this sport that Brian Johnson (RHP - BOS), one of the biggest stiffs in the game, is favored over an elite pitcher like Aaron Nola (LHP - PHI)?

Like last year and every year that he’s pitched at this level, Johnson, the soft-tossing swingman is being counted on to eat some much-needed innings for the Red Sox, but that's about all he's good for. Hois heavy fly-ball lean, low swing & miss rate, and poor first-pitch strike rate make him a blowup risk every time out. He gets this start only because Chris Sale is on the 10-day IL. In 22 frames, Johnson has an xERA of 6.41, a 5% swing & miss rate and a 44% first-pitch strike rate and a 2.01 WHIP.

Aaron Nola has a BB/K split of 9/35 over his last 33 innings with a 57% groundball rate, a 2.76/3.16 ERA/xERA split and he’s in the best form of the season right now. Some early struggles and wildness may have the market a little reluctant to pull the trigger here but only in “Bizzaro World” can Brian Johnson be favored over Aaron Nola.
