7:20 PM EST. Zack Wheeler (RHP - NYM) is not a mediocre piece, he’s a significant one and he’s also one the Mets did not want to trade at the deadline. His skills are better than ever with 11 K’s/9, 1.5 BB’s/9, a 48% groundball rate and an xERA of 3.26. Wheeler’s rates of swinging and first-pitch strikes are soaring too and just in case one needs more convincing of just how good he is, his groundball rate over his last five starts is 57%. Overall, Wheeler has 149 K’s in 139 innings with just 35 walks issued. Wheeler was activated from the 10-day injured list on July 26 but returned after missing the minimum time on the IL and he hasn’t missed a beat since. In fact, he’s fresher after that brief stint and we’re thrilled to get him and the Mets plus anything.
Max Fried (LHP - ATL) is having a nice season, with 13 wins under his belt and decent skills, however he is not the superior starter in this matchup. Fried’s 13-4 record and the fact that he’s coming off one of his better starts of the season (struck out 10) means you’ll pay to get behind him here. Both of his starts versus the Mets this season have resulted in good, not great performances. The Mets present a tough challenge to left-handed pitching, as they have an .810 OPS when facing them but this wager is not about fading Atlanta or Max Fried. It’s about getting behind Zach Wheeler and the Mets while being offered a tag.
