7:10 PM EST. Yesterday we wrote an entire essay on why the Yanks should be dead tired and all they did was go out and score eight runs in an easy 8-4 victory in the opener of this series. In the spirit of “sticking with it”, we’re coming right back on the Rays today.

Current Rays batters have a combined 172 AB’s vs. Masahiro Tanaka (RHP - NYY) so he’s not going to thrown them anything they haven’t seen before. Furthermore, Tanaka is showing signs of an injury or a tired arm, as he has just 20 K’s over his last 28 frames, his velocity is down a tick and so is his swinging strike rate. Tanaka’s swing and miss rate last game was 0% in that bizarre game in London, England when the Red Sox knocked him out in the first inning. We’re not going to put a lot of emphasis on that one but he, like the team, have got to be feeling some fatigue after such an exhausting 10 or so days.

A two-way prospect a la Shohei Ohtani, Brendan McKay (LHP - TAM) was a 2017 first-round pick out of Louisville. He has utterly dominated on the mound thus far in 2019, having basically split his time between Double-A and Triple-A. Indeed, his pitching ability is further ahead than his hitting at this point, and on the bump is where he'll have a chance to shine. McKay features four advanced pitches: a two-seam fastball, a cutter, a 1-to-7 curve and an improving changeup. 2019 has been his first taste above Single-A, but McKay has outclassed the opposition. Over his limited minor league career (spanning 165 IP) he holds a 1.85 ERA, 11.6 K’s/9 and a 0.83 WHIP. In his first start at this level, all McKay did was go six full and allow one hit and zero runs against the then hot Texas Rangers. The Yanks have zero combined AB’s v McKay while Tampa has seen Tanaka dozens of times.
