2:20 PM EST Braves prospect Bryse Wilson (RHP - ATL) gets the call-up here for a start in place of the recently-demoted Mike Foltynewicz. Wilson had a 3.79 ERA with 9.1 K’s/9 over 14 games started at Triple-A so far in 2019, and he could be catching the Cubs at a good time, as they have a .721 OPS in June. Wilson is 1-1 with a 3.43 ERA, a 1.33 WHIP and 28 K's in 21 innings over four starts at Triple-A Gwinnett this month. He had one bad start in Philadelphia way back in the first week of the season and then had a very good relief appearance in late April against the Rockies. He’ll now get another shot at the rotation. Wilson accelerated quickly through the Braves system last season, even garnering a late-season look, including a masterful performance in his debut against the Mets. Wilson went from being the poor man’s Mike Soroka to his own man overnight. He added velocity to his fastball and improved the plane and movement of the pitch, which caused the pitch to go from average to plus. His secondaries are sharp and poised to collect strikeouts. His one big issue climbing so fast was struggles with fastball command for the first time in his career. However, in the spring his command was wonderful. So much so, he earned a spot in the Braves rotation but with the amount of quality arms they had to start the year, the Braves chose to send him back down for more seasoning. In 78 innings at Triple-A Gwinnett, Wilson walked just 16 batters while striking out 79.
Tyler Chatwood (RHP - CHC) does what he does. He’s an emergency starter if needed. He’s a mop-up guy if needed. He can get an important out or two from time to time or even come in to induce a grounder, double-play ball. All in all, Tyler Chatwood has appeared in 18 games this year with two of those being starts. In 39 innings, he’s walked 22 and struck out 30 but his 6½% swing & miss rate does not support those 22 K’s, which isn’t even that great a number to begin with. Chatwood has a strong groundball lean but at the end of the day, he’s always at the mercy of BABIP and his defense. Coming over from Colorado, Chatwood left what little control he had in Rockies and more often than not, mountains of trouble ensues. Truth is, he lost his starting role, LHB continue to club him and he’s now being asked to start against the hottest team in the majors.
