8:05 PM EST. Ivan Nova beat Cole Hamels yesterday. Cinci beat Verlander. Jordan Yamamoto and the Marlins beat Jack Flaherty in St. Louis and K.C. beat Seattle 9-0. That was a highly unusual day in a year in which so many underdogs are getting buried. This has been a top heavy season so far so perhaps that was a sign that things will “even out” over the course of a season but it was also a reminder to stick to playing value and things will work out. That brings us to the South Side.

Lucas Giolito (RHP - CHW) used to be a pitcher with some big holes in his toolbox against left-handed batters. He has put those struggles behind him. Both his stats (2.52 ERA, 0.76 WHIP) and skills against lefties have been fantastic this season. He also has been dominant against RH hitters (2.02 ERA, 1.09 WHIP). Lucas Giolito is no fluke and is legit one of MLB’s best pitchers. Keep riding him.

We have documented or faded Jon Lester (LHP - CHC) many times this year and we’re not about to stop here. Lester threw a combined 225 pitches over two starts in early May. Since then, the veteran lefty has logged a 7.59 ERA and a 5.80 xERA. His underlying numbers offer no support either. Steer clear.
