In this day and age, starting pitchers need bullpens to finish and the Nats pen is horrible. Max Scherzer has two wins in 12 starts this year with five losses. He’s also a fly-ball pitcher in a small park here. Max Scherzer is great but the Nationals are not and it’s for that reason that we’ll take the superior team at home at a price with their ace on the mound.

Sonny Gray (RHP - CIN) will face a Nationals’ squad that has been a below-average offense vs. RHP's. His 56% groundball rate and 3.29 xERA are both elite. Gray has 64 K’s in 56 innings with a supported 13% swing and miss rate that was 16% in his last start. Gray appears to be getting stronger too, as he delivered a 3.07 xERA and 0.98 WHIP over his last three starts with a great batted ball profile of 57%/19%/24% groundball/line-drive/fly-balls. Those rates came with the full support of his underlying skills. If this one gets decided by the pens, we’re good with that. If it isn’t decided by the pens, we’re good with that too.
