7:10 PM EST. The Rays are going with a start by committee with Ryne Stanek being the first-inning pitcher so there is really no reason to discuss Tampa’s starter. This is a strategy that the Rays use and that has been successful. This wager is a straight fade against the anemic offense of the Blue Jays and against their weak starter.

Clayton Richard made his season debut against Boston last week and went 4.2 innings while allowing just two hits and one earned run. On paper it looks pretty but the real story is that every hard hit ball was right at someone. Richard faced 16 batters and struck out two. His first-pitch strike rate was 50% and his swing & miss rate was 7%. Clayton Richard is a 35-year-old lefty who was traded to the Jays from San Diego for “cash considerations”, which is the same as paying back a favor to a GM who you owed a favor to. Richard made 27 starts last year for the Padres and posted a 5.33 ERA in a extreme pitchers park. He shut it down in late August and underwent two surgeries to clean up various issues. In 2013, he had left shoulder surgery and in 2014 he underwent thoracic outlet syndrome surgery. The Padres owe him 3M this year but this is a starter that is being held together by glue and that the Jays will use to try and eat up innings while they rebuild. In the meantime, we’ll take this opportunity to fade him.
