4:05 PM EST. We don’t want to overreact to the Diamondbacks hanging 18 runs on the Giants yesterday, at this park no less, but we’re almost always on board with fading the Giants when they’re favored. Frankly, we’re not sure why they’re favored here so if the Snakes are the sucker bet of the day, shame on us. Actually, we think we know why the Giants are favored and it’s because Arizona will send out an unknown 26-year-old rookie named Taylor Clarke (RHP - ARI), who had a 7.22 ERA in the minors in seven starts this year.

First off, Clarke has always been a starter in the minors. His main appeal is his ability to limit walks. For his career, he only walked 2.2 batters per nine innings and that includes nearly a year-and-a-half worth of starts in the hitter-friendly PCL. He features a low-90s fastball along with an average cutter and slider. He occasionally will showcase a curve too so he has four pitches to work with. Clarke has made a steady progression through the minors during his career, and with continued command, he could end up being a useful innings-eater in the majors. See that 7.22 ERA in the minors this year? Pay no attention, as his career minor league ERA is 3.53 with an oppBA of .254. In his nine innings this year at the MLB level, Clark has not walked a batter and has induced an elite 55% grounders.

Pitching for the Giants, Andrew Suarez (LHP - SF) is worth fading 100% of the time when he’s favored. Suarez made 29 starts for the Giants in his rookie season last year so he has more credibility than Clarke and he even impressed at times (on paper) but he’s practically worthless. Suarez’s solid 1st half ERA last year was driven by a career-high K-rate which his swing and miss rate didn't support. His second half reversion was no surprise and neither was the fact that he failed to make the team out of spring training. Suarez is at this level now because the Giants have some injured starters. Suarez walked four in his first outing on May 20 in a loss to Atlanta. He’ll now face a righty-heavy Arizona lineup (83%) which has been effective against southpaws. How was he doing in the minors before this call-up you ask? His numbers at AAA-Sacramento: 6.33 ERA and a 1.70 WHIP in six starts comprising 27 innings.
