7:05 PM EST. Kyle Hendricks (RHP - CHC) pitched eight innings of one-run ball to grab the win Tuesday against the Reds. He allowed just three hits and a walk while striking out seven. Hendricks now has a BB/K split of 9/41 through 50 innings and continues to eat up innings while giving the Cubs an opportunity to win almost every time he starts. The craftsman holds a 2.86/3.85 ERA/xERA through his first nine starts while reclaiming his heater's command. His changeup continues to be the massive deceiver. There's still a small margin for error that can create the valleys of production through a six-month season but this has nothing to do with backing Hendricks. He just happens to be the Cubs starter today against our target.

After facing Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg in the first two games of this series, facing Jeremy Hellickson (RHP - WAS) should be like batting practice for the Cubbies. In between injuries last year, Hellickson recorded his lowest ERA since 2013 in 19 starts with the Nationals and they saw enough to bring him back on a one-year-deal and we have to try and capitalize. Hellickson doesn’t generate many swings and misses. His change-up is his best at generating whiffs, but the velo gap between that pitch and his fastball is closing, and his 15 percent swing and miss rate on the pitch is the lowest of his career. Hellickson has one quality start in seven attempts this season. He brings a 1.67 WHIP into this matchup and a 1.79 WHIP over his last five games. His swing and miss rate is 6% and his line drive rate is 29%. One would be hard-pressed to find an xERA or surface ERA for that matter that is worse than Hellickson’s 7.31 xERA over his last five starts or his 6.00 overall ERA.
