7:10 PM EST. The Mets bats have gone silent after a hot start to the season, but they did rack up seven hits in the opener of this series despite only plating one run. That tally is 50% of the offense the Mets have put up in their last three games and when you consider the other run was a home run off the bat of pitcher Noah Syndergaard in a 1-0 win over the Reds on Wednesday, the Mets appear to be easy pickings. New York averaged 5.6 runs through its first 23 games, but that number has dropped to just 2.6 over its last nine. A correction could be coming in that department and we hope it's today.

The Mets will send Zack Wheeler (RHP - NYM) and his 2-2 record out to the mound today. Wheeler sports an ERA of 5.05, but a closer look shows that his xERA is a much more respectable 4.08. Wheeler has a low strand rate (65.5%) and he's one of the more reliable ground ball pitchers on the board today (48%). He's striking out at least a batter an inning with his 9.34 K/9. Before his last start against the Reds, Wheeler punched out 11 and had a string of three quality starts in a row. Against Cincinnati, Wheeler gave up four runs on seven hits and did not factor into the decision. A bounce-back here against the free-swinging Brewers is not out of the question.

There isn't much you can throw across the plate that this Milwaukee team will not try and eat up, as they are averaging 9.35 strikeouts per game. The Crew signed veteran Gio Gonzalez (LHP - MIL) off the scrap heap after he asked to be released from his minor league deal with the Yankees and he pitched against these Mets on Sunday allowing two runs on six hits over five innings. Gio has been on the downslide the last few seasons, as his velocity has faded and his K-rate and command have suffered. We're not going to lay off fading Gio when the situation warrants and the Mets could get to him here with a second look at him in just a week.
