Frankly, this run line price on the Angels is a steal when you consider that the Indians are -1½ -125 over Minnesota, the Mats are -1½ -105 over the Braves in the first end of a DH and the Yanks are -1½ -120 in Chicago. This one is as big a mismatch or bigger than all of those. For one, the Tigers have been the coldest team in MLB since the All-Star break, averaging just 3.2 runs per game while having a .209 BA and .574 OPS over that span. That cold offense will now face another under the radar ace in Andrew Heaney (LHP). Heaney comes into this start on an absolute tear, as over his last six starts he is 2-2 with a 3.35 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, 2.99 xERA, and a BB/K split of 8/40 over 40 innings.

By contrast, Jacob Turner makes his first start of the year after four relief appearances covering six frames. Turner is back in the majors despite faring poorly earlier in 2017. Over 39 innings with the Nationals, he had a 5.38 xERA with a lousy 5.3 K’s/9 and terrible control. Until and unless he shows some indications that he has suddenly found the ingredients for success, Turner should be avoided. Turner has shown promise before but a 10.31 xERA and a 15.88 ERA over six 2018 innings led inexorably to his being designated for assignment prior to this start. Turner has walked five batters, struck out two and has a 4% swing and miss rate over his small sample this season. The Angels, like those other aforementioned teams should be -1½ and juice here but they’re not, which prompts us to move in hard.
