8:15 PM EST. Jonathan Gray (RHP) was optioned to AAA on June 30, but quickly returned to the big leagues. He has thrown dominant games in both of his starts since returning, which shouldn't come as a surprise when looking at his skills (11.1 K’s/9, 132 K’s in 106 frames and a xERA of 3.22). His season has been derailed by the combination of a 38% hit rate and 63% strand rate leading to a 5.16 ERA despite a 3.22 xERA. Gray’s xERA is even more impressive when you factor in where he pitches half his games.

Jack Flaherty (RHP) has emerged as one of the better young starters in the NL in 2018, both on the surface (3.15 ERA, 1.11 WHIP) and beneath it with 10.8 K’s/9, 43% grounders and a xERA of 3.31. However, he’s only made 16 starts and doesn’t pitch deep into games. That leaves an erratic Cards bullpen (4.56 xERA) to finish the deal and that adds to Colorado’s value here. Flaherty’s not as seasoned as Gray and the Cards offense is the second best unit going to the plate in this game.
