12:35 PM EST. Anibal Sanchez (RHP) was left for dead on the scrap heap after the Twins released him before the season started but the veteran has quietly been a big reason for the Braves' early season success. Since he took a spot in the rotation in May, Sanchez is 2-0 with a 2.31 ERA and he's only given up 14 hits in 23.1 frames. In his last start against the Padres, Sanchez struck out six, while allowing no free passes over seven shutout innings. The 34-year-old draws an interleague turn at Toronto today against a resurgent Blue Jays offense batting .297/.352/.513 over its last 10 games but remember, four of those games came against the putrid staff the Orioles. Sanchez has been quite effective over his last three starts, and his change-up-based off-speed stuff fits well against the Jays. Over his last 28 starts on five-day rest, Sanchez has held foes to a .614 OPS and .228 BAA. Sanchez has a skills supported BB/K split of 5/23 over his last 28 innings and it’s safe to say that he’s back from the dead.

J.A. Happ's (LHP) stock continues to soar, as he is inexplicably putting together arguably his best season ever. The 35-year-old is coming off back-to-back starts where he's allowed no runs on three hits over 12 innings pitched. Over his last six starts, Happ is 4-0 with a 1.91 ERA and his opponents are hitting a paltry .146, but despite what his surface stats say, we're still not buying it. Happ has added nothing to his game to justify his getting better with age. His fastball is still in the low 90s, which is where it’s been for pretty much his entire career. That kind of heat does not intimidate major league hitters but Happ is an outlier in that he's not moving away from his fastball in favor of more spin to get his swings and misses. He's actually throwing more fastballs than just about anybody in the bigs. The only guy ahead of Happ is also having unexplained success this season and that's Bartolo Colon. That is not the kind of company we want the pitchers we're backing to keep. Happ's success is unsustainable and if that inevitable downturn starts this afternoon, we must be on board to capitalize.
