2:10 PM EST. Folks are going to look at Lucas Giolito’s (LHP) surface stats (7.09 ERA - 1.65 WHIP) and run for the hills but this is a kid with nasty stuff. His inability to throw strikes is the only reason for his horrible surface stats. That’s along with his surface numbers is a big reason to fade him, which many will but he is subtly trending in the right direction. Giolito stands 6'6" and weighs 255 pounds. He had perhaps the best two-pitch combination in the minor leagues with his fastball/curve. His plus-plus fastball is heavy and lively and sits in the mid-90s. The curveball is a sharp two-plane offering that is also plus. His change-up has improved, giving him three good pitches. He has a clean, repeatable delivery and he pitches downhill. In his minor-league career, Giolito was whiffing 10 batters per nine innings. For whatever reason, his control has abandoned him at this level but he and the pitching coaches are working extensively and getting that corrected. His shoulders are lined up better towards home plate and we’ve seen him slay both the Cubbies and Indians this year for stretches. This kid has massive pedigree and wicked stuff but his stock is as low as it ever will be. This line absolutely suggests that oddsmakers know just how dangerous he could be.

Meanwhile, Jordan Zimmermann (RHP) comes off the DL to start his first game in over a month. Prior, Zimmermann was 2-0 in seven starts with a 4.88 ERA. Undefeated in seven starts is nice but it means jack, as Zimmermann’s free-fall continued. The only thing he does well now is get strike one. As right-handers thump him more and more each season, it's an indication that he has run out of tricks. This is what happens when you live in strike zone but can't miss bats. Without a new pitch, that won't change and with a month off, this starter is one of the least appealing in MLB.
