1:35 PM EST. Big difference in mindset here, as the Phillies are reeling with 4 losses in a row and seven defeats in their last eight while the Brewers just scored 12 runs in back-to-back games at this park and can’t wait to get back there this afternoon. Milwaukee is seeing beach balls at the plate while the Phillies are seeing BB gun pellets.

Zach Eflin (RHP) has started just six games this year and has looked pretty good, both on the surface (3.74 ERA, 1.28 WHIP) and beneath it with 31 K’s in 34 innings but do not buy it for a second. This will be Eflin’s third crack at starting with the Phils. He started a total of 22 games in 2016 and 2017 and wound up with a 5.11 xERA with a weak 4.7 K’s/9. He did not make the team out of spring training but an injury to Ben Lively opened the door again. Last year, his second verse was as bad as the first. Sure, we can point to an unjust trifecta of hit%-strand%-hr/f but we can also point to a minuscule whiff rate that locks in subpar command and an xERA that's right in line with his weak two-year surface stats that combined to create a profile on life support. Still young, but we’re not going to put emphasis on six starts over his past history of four times that many. Also note that Eflin’s ERA was 1.54 after three starts and three starts later, it’s 3.74.

Brandon Woodruff (RHP, MIL) has been better than is reflected in his 6.05 ERA this season. Working in a swingman role, the right-hander has been respectable outside of a three-inning, seven-run disaster at Coors Field on May 11. Having logged 20 K’s in 19 innings, Woodruff has shown enough to get behind when he faces a slumping Phillies lineup that has averaged 2.0 runs per game in their past nine contests. We like Woodruff. He has velocity (96 MPH) with life as seen here:

Woodruff also showcases the ability to spot the pitch on both sides of the plate, such as getting the ball on the inside corner to freeze Christian Yelich.

Every fastball needs a sidekick and for Woodruff, it’s his slider. Batters are hitting just .167 off the pitch and Woodruff is able to steal outs with his bender all the time. His changeup has shown flashes of brilliance too although he doesn’t rely on the pitch all too much – just 11.8% of the time this year – and saves it as another option deeper in the game. Woodruff still has work to do, as he’s been inconsistent and loses command from time to time but right now the Phillies are gripping their bats tight and a pitcher with good stuff should be able to do damage. Big edge to the Crew in pitching, hitting and current form.
