1:07 PM EST. The Blue Jays and Orioles mirror each other in many ways and most of them aren't favorable. Both teams have losing records and are out of the AL East race by double-digits. Trade rumors swirl with Manny Machado most notably on the Baltimore side, while the Blue Jays are looking to move just about anything not nailed down at Rogers Centre. The only "untouchables" for Toronto are said to be their young arms in Marcus Stroman and today's starter, Aaron Sanchez.

The 26-year-old Sanchez has the raw talent to start in the big leagues, but he hasn't been able to put it together with any consistency this season. He's just 3-5 with an ERA of 4.48 and his xERA is an inflated 5.07. A walk rate of 5.16 BB/9 is second worse only to Miami's Dan Straily among today's starters, which is not the kind of pitcher you want your potential future ace to be keeping company with. Sanchez has a lackluster BB/K ratio of 38/53 in 66.1 innings and he has not pitched well at home, as he's winless in six starts at Rogers Centre this season. Sure he gets to face an Orioles lineup that has the third most strikeouts in the American League, but his Blue Jays teammates are right behind the Orange Birds in fourth place on that dubious list.

Enter Kevin Gausman, who like his counterpart has top-five draft pick pedigree but has yet to reach his full potential. Unlike Sanchez, Gausman is issuing fewer free passes over last season and he has dropped his walk rate by 1.23 BB/9. Gausman has flamed 68 batters in 70 frames and his 17/70 BB/K ratio is a sharp contrast to that of Sanchez. On the surface, Gausman looks comparable to Sanchez with his ERA of 4.62, but his xERA is a much more respectable 3.67. Better days are ahead for the 27-year-old Gausman and we're not going to miss this opportunity to invest. Advantage, Orioles.
