Winnipeg +5 over SASKATCHEWAN

6:00 PM EST. There is not much you can count on in this life, but a few clichés have stood the test of time. Here’s another one that has stood the test of time…..the Roughriders blasting that Blue Bomber ass on Labour Day weekend, Sure, there have been exceptions to the rule. A big play here or a memorable win there (when there are so few, aren't they are all memorable) is about all the Bombers have salvaged over the last 72 years or so. For one reason or another, 56 games have been played between these two sides on the first weekend of September, with the Roughies holding an all-time 37-18 record. Most of those 18 Blue Bombers’ victories came when a ticket to go to a CFL game was $5 or less. The Blue Bombers were once the class of this league and they had good showings on Labour Day until around 1982. At that point, the series was 9-9. You can surely see where this is going.

It does not take a mathematics major to figure how the Blue Bombers have fared against their prairie cousins since. We'll spare you the details and get to the gruesome part; since 2004, the Bombers have won one Labour Day Classic in the Queen City. They spoiled the Riders' brand new digs in a tight 28-25 final back in 2016.

Let's fast forward to modern-day, fucked up as it is. The Bombers were on full display for the football world last Sunday evening against the Bo Levi-less Stampeders. There was nothing else on for the sports fan and this game received more attention than most. We got more messages from dudes looking for a suggested play on that one game than we usually get for the entirety of a CFL weekend. If you didn't watch, the Blue Bombers were fortunate to escape with the win and at no point did it look like they were going to cover the -6½ point spread. Recent results loom large and with its US TV coverage, the CFL as a betting option is gaining traction in the market. Why the fuck do you think it's on TV? Fuck, ESPN won't even vet a fake high school football team coached by a wanted man. The point is, the Blue Bombers have some stank on them and the market does not like the scent.

The Green Riders opened as a modest -2½ point choice in this high profile matchup. The market as you may have seen has taken a stand. We get it. We've seen the Blue Bombers get their heads kicked in nearly every Labour Day Sunday for decades. We can't imagine how hard it will be for those newer to the league to pull the trigger on what looks like a yearly lock. However, are we to trust that Saskatchewan is that much better than Winnipeg?

Saskatchewan is 3-0 with three straight home games under their belts. Mosaic Stadium has been sold out for weeks. The Riders covered as a -10 point choice in a 23-10 put down of Ottawa in their last game. They embarrassed preseason Grey Cup favorite Hamilton 30-8 the week prior. In Week 1, they beat B.C, 33-29. We’ll now break it down for you. Each Rider victory has been progressively worse, not better. In Week 1, B.C. nearly rallied from 31 points down in a four-point loss. In Saskatchwans’s win over the Tigercats, Hamilton turned the ball over four times before Jeremiah Masoli was benched. Masoli has not played since and probably won’t unless forced to because of injuries. The Riders win and cover over Ottawa, the most inept offensive team in decades, wasn’t only very fortunate, it was ugly as hell, as time of possession in that game was nearly even.

With all due respect, we've watched nearly every minute of CFL action this season and we can confidently say that nobody has our respect. Saskatchewan is no better than Montreal, Toronto, Hamilton, B.C., Calgary, Edmonton or Winnipeg but because they’re 3-0 and because Winnipeg looked so bad last week, we get the Blue Bombers taking back inflated points here in a game they’ll probably win and expose the Riders for the very mediocre team that they truly are.
