9:00 PM EST. The Roughriders split ways with some notable fan favorites this offseason, which is a situation that has seemingly been head coach and general manager Chris Jones' calling card since his arrival in Regina. Even the local papers have questioned Jones' approach to winning by suggesting it likes what he is doing but not the way he is doing it. Over the last couple of seasons, Jones has sent beloved vets like John Chick, Chris Getzlaf, Darian Durant and Rob Bagg packing. Bagg was the most recent to be escorted to the gallows before hitting the chopping block. The Roughies are a defensive-minded team, but most of the offseason drama surrounded their quarterback situation, where it was the worst kept secret around that the newly acquired Zach Collaros would be named the starter over Canadian Brandon Bridge, who did perform admirably last season. However, having two capable QBs is not a problem in today's game and is actually almost a necessity. In the CFL, if you've got a quarterback, you've got a chance and Collaros is as good as they come.

The Argonauts won their 17th Grey Cup last November after downing the heavily favored Stampeders in the championship game. That feat might seem more impressive if that nightmare scenario hadn't played out for Calgary in both 2016 and 2017. Back to the Argos, who will once again send out Ricky Ray at quarterback. The difference for Toronto and its aging QB this year over last is now there are high expectations. Coach Marc Trestman is famous for riding veteran pivot Anthony Calvillo to multiple Grey Cup championships in Montreal and the day he got to Toronto he left no doubt by naming Ray his starter. While the 38-year-old Ray was excellent last season, the reason his job was up for debate was that he was coming off two injury-plagued campaigns. A record-setting fourth Grey Cup championship as a starter would have been the perfect final chapter to a Hall Of Fame career, but like an old gunslinger or prizefighter, it's hard to walk away. Ray didn't play in either of Toronto's exhibition games, a right he has undoubtedly earned, but going "full speed" at practice cannot replace the intensity of a live game. Ricky took his time this offseason before making his decision to come back so it's not unfair to ask where his head might be at. The Argos added a pair of new offensive coaches with former receivers coach Tommy Condell replacing Marcus Brady as offensive coordinator and the aforementioned Calvillo, who was once an old adversary, is now Ray's quarterback coach. There's enough change here that the Argos probably should not be spotting points on the road especially in a lion's den like Saskatchewan in Week 1.
